Beginners’ Pattern Drafting for Womenswear

Learn the fundamentals of creating your own sewing patterns from scratch in this 12-week pattern drafting class. Perfect for anyone with basic sewing experience who wants to understand how garments are constructed, this course introduces the essential principles of pattern drafting using body measurements and simple drafting techniques.

Participants will learn how to take accurate measurements, draft basic pattern blocks, and adapt them into simple garment designs. Throughout the course, you’ll gain confidence reading, creating, and modifying patterns while developing a deeper understanding of fit and garment structure.

By the end of the 12 weeks, students will have drafted and sewn their own basic bodice and sleeve blocks. Participants will then use these blocks to design and make a garment.

Who This Class Is For:This class is suitable for people who can already sew and would like to learn how to design and make their own clothes.

When Is This Class On:                                                                                                                                                                                

  Wednesdays from 19.00 – 22.00                                                                                                                                     

Materials:Long ruler (ideally a large set square or machinist’s square), pencils, paper scissors.                                                                                

Sewing machines will be provided. We have a selection of wheelchair friendly machines.

Note: This class is open to participants of all genders. However, the drafting techniques taught will focus on womenswear blocks and garment shapes. Tailoring and menswear drafting involve different pattern structures and construction methods and are considered a speciality area that requires separate study.
